Winter of
'86

— the heating is off. the winter is long.

Winter of '86 is a first-person survival game set in a block of flats in communist Romania, in the hard winter of 1986. The radiators are cold, the power is cut every evening, and a blizzard buries the town.

You live through it the way people did: a candle lit with a match, a tiled stove fed with logs carried up from the basement, linden tea from a kettle on the range, sleep under heavy blankets. Keep your body warm, keep the flat livable, get through the winter.

Winter of '86 is in development. No public build yet — the Windows release is coming.

The cold

Every room has its own temperature. Heat comes from the stoves you light, leaks through windows and open doors, and fades through the night. Your body feels it: cold hands shake the candle, a hot mug warms you from inside, a good night's sleep needs a warm room.

The power follows the schedule of the time — on in the morning, cut in the evening. When the bulbs go out, the candle in your hand is the only light you have.

What is in the game

World

A whole block of flats

Apartments, a stairwell, a basement with the wood stores, the snowed-in street outside. Each new winter draws its own wallpapers, floors and furniture.

Light

Real light, pixel-art look

Bulbs, stoves, the candle and the moon cast real shadows, lit per texel so they match the big pixels of the textures. No light through walls.

Hands

Everything done by hand

Strike a match and light the candle, carry logs under your arm, open the stove's door, take a book off a shelf and read it, pour tea, check your watch.

Things

Take, put, throw

Books, glasses, mugs and the kettle can be picked up, set down anywhere or thrown — they fall, bounce and roll.

Sound

Sounds made in code

Creaking doors, the stove's fire, the pendulum clock, the typewriter, the pipes in the basement, the radio, the wind outside.

Body

Sleep, warmth, hunger

Lie down in a bed or on the sofa; how long you sleep depends on how tired you are and how cold the room is.

Planned for the future
